Celebrating the pioneers and the game-changers, NairaGent pays homage to Femi Otedola, born on November 4, 1962, one of Nigeria richest men and top philanthropist donated 5 billion Naira (on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at a ceremony organized by the Cuppy Foundation in Abuja) to the Save the Children Fund, which is one of the most single and largest individual donation to charity in Nigeria’s history.
The charity works to improve the welfare of Nigeria’s vulnerable and marginalized children, focusing on early childhood education and healthcare among numerous other programmes.
“God has been so kind, the only way I can show my gratitude to Him is to use my resources to support those who are underprivileged. This I intend to do for the rest of my life. In a world full of conflicts, diseases, calamities and inequality, we all need to show the milk of human kindness, to reach out and comfort the sick and give a helping hand to the weak.” – Femi Otedola.
What People Said About Femi Otedola’s Donation to the Save the Children Fund
- Nigeria Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo said it is “the single largest donation to philanthropy in the country.”
- Reno Omokri: “Femi Otedola has just put the billionaires of the North East to shame. Where are the Indimis, the Mai Deribe family and other oil billionaires from the North East? Google their names and some of the first pictures you will see are of their children in private jets marrying President’s children and displaying obscene wealth while surrounded by extreme poverty. It took a Good Samaritan stranger to do what the natives of the North East failed to do! Shame on them and God bless the talakawa that they have refused to look after.”
Responding to Otedola’s donation, Kevin Watkins, the CEO of Save The Children, pledged that every penny out of it would be spent improving the lives of the children affected by insurgency in the northeast. Otedola’s donation will be managed by the Save The Children Fund and will be used to finance various intervention programmes for children in Borno, Adamawa and Katsina.
Leading the Way
Femi Otedola would probably be most remembered for his acts of philanthropy in the long run, that is his social entrepreneurship, the readiness with which he offers a helping hand.
In the last year or so, he has been on record for paying the medical bills of Majek Fashek (the Reggae musician who sang “Send Down The Rain”), Christian Chukwu (former Captain and coach of the Super Eagles or the Green Eagles as the team was earlier known), famous Nigerian actors Sadiq Daba and Victor Olaotan.
Femi Otedola deserves special recognition for his kind generosity. By his singular act, and other philanthropic contributions, we at Nairagent gladly present the 2019 NairaGent Person of the Year award to Femi Otedola, one of Nigeria’s greatest philanthropist.
